Celtic came into this game desperately searching for a win after loosing their first two games in this season’s UEFA champions League , their domestic form has been phenomenal winning eight of their nine games in the Scottish League. Celtic boss, Brendan Rodgers lined his side up in a 4-3-3 formation with Joe Hart in goal, Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales at the centre of defense, Conor McGregor at the middle of the pack and Japanese international,Kyogo Furuhashi played the center role in attack.
Atletico Madrid has been on a good run coming into this game winning their last six games in all competitions and Antonio Greizmann turning up greatly for the Spanish side. Atletico Madrid boss, Diego Simeone lined up a 3-5-2 formation with Oblak in goal, Belgium international, Axel Witsel at the center of defense, koke,Saul and Rodrigo De Paul were at the middle of the pack while Alvaro Morata and Antoine Greizmann were the forwards.
Celtic made a dream start to the game with Kyogo Furuhashi putting them ahead four minutes into the game but their lead only lasted 21 minutes as Atletico Madrid were awarded a penalty due to the foul on Molina,Griezmann stepped up and made no mistake converting from the spot. It didn’t take long before Atletico Madrid fell behind again,Luis Palma restored Celtic’s lead in the 28th minute, he was assisted by Daizen Maeda. The first half ended with Celtic in front, the Scottish side was good at the back and managed to deny the Spanish side from going level.
Diego Simeone made two changes in the midfield at the half time, Marcos Llorente came in to replace Galan and Rodrigo Riquelme came in to replace Saul. Marcos Llorente didn’t take long to make a difference as he created the second goal, he crossed the ball into the box in the 53rd minute in which Morata headed home perfectly. Both sides didn’t create much in the second half as most of the possession was in the midfield, the goalkeepers had little to do and both sides didn’t want to go behind. There was still time for more drama as De Paul was given his marching orders in the 82nd minute, Celtic had the numerical advantage late in the game but couldn’t make use of it, the game ended with a draw.
Atletico Madrid is second in Group E with five points, they are unbeaten in this season’s UEFA Champions League they face Celtic at the Civitas Metropolitan Stadium, Madrid on the 7th of November 2023.
Brendan Rodgers could be proud of his side’s performance,no one expected them to get a result out of today’s game but they did it against all odds it was disappointing they couldn’t get the three points despite their numerical advantage late in the game but the players can raise their heads high, they sit bottom of Group E and will need a win in their next game to make it out of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
