Nigeria beat Mali to win the FIBA AfroBasket 2025 title. It was the fifth consecutive title for D’Tigress, and their seventh overall. Nigeria won 78–64.
The win means they became the first team in Africa’s women’s basketball history to win five continental championships in a row. They have also booked their place in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany.
The D’Tigress female basketball team has proven to be superior. This isn’t the first time they’re creating history. A year ago, they became the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympics—thanks to the brilliance of Coach Rena Wakama.
Wakama, a 33-year-old basketball tactical genius, was appointed as D’Tigress head coach in 2023. She became the first coach to lead an African team to the quarter-finals of the Olympics, the first to defeat a Top 3 team at the Olympics, the first female coach to win Afrobasket, and the first to win back-to-back Afrobasket titles.
It has been a beautiful past few months for women’s sports in Nigeria , as both the country’s female football team and basketball team were crowned Champions of Africa.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulated the girls on X. He stated:
“Superb performance to become 5x consecutive Champions of Africa and seventh overall. Well done, Coach Rena and the team. You have made Nigeria proud. I am expecting you all, along with the trophy.”
