English football icon Gary Lineker will part ways with the BBC at the end of the current season after facing significant backlash over a controversial social media post.
The controversy erupted when the 64-year-old appeared to liken supporters of Israel’s genocide in Gaza to “rats”—a term widely condemned and viewed by many as antisemitic. Although Lineker deleted the post shortly after it began attracting criticism, the fallout was swift.
In an apology video posted later, Lineker expressed regret over the incident, saying: “I would never knowingly share anything antisemitic. It goes against everything I believe in.” He added that he took down the image “as soon as I became aware of the issue.” He continued: “Whilst I strongly believe in the importance of speaking out on humanitarian issues, including the tragedy unfolding in Gaza, I also know that how we do so matters. I take full responsibility for this mistake. That image does not reflect my views. It was an error on my part, for which I apologise unreservedly.”
Following internal discussions, Lineker has reportedly chosen to step down from his role at the BBC, bringing an end to a 25-year spell as the face of the popular Match of the Day highlights programme. He is also currently the broadcaster’s highest-paid presenter.
As a result, Lineker will not be part of the BBC’s coverage of upcoming major tournaments, including the 2026 FA Cup and FIFA World Cup.
