Richard Gasquet has said goodbye to tennis after being beaten by Jannik Sinner in his final match. The Italian recorded a 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 victory over the 38-year-old.
It was an emotional moment for Gasquet as he drew the curtain on a remarkable career that began in 2002 and saw him play more than 1,000 matches.
World number one Sinner paid tribute to Gasquet, saying: “Congrats for everything you have done—an amazing career, but most importantly, an amazing person.”
A video was also produced by Roland-Garros, featuring incredible tennis stars like Sinner, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic saying goodbye to the French tennis legend.
Gasquet told the crowd: “I haven’t really taken it all in yet. I’m happy to finish at practically 39. I couldn’t have dreamt of a better end, because you never know what could happen in your last tournament. It’s not always easy everywhere. To finish today on Chatrier against the world number one—it’s a wonderful end for me. I’m very happy with what I was able to do for this event.”
