Nico Williams was abused in Athletic Bilbao's 3-1 loss against Atlético Madrid. In the first half, Nico wanted to take a corner for Athletic Bilbao, and the fans started chanting monkey noises, to the disappointment of Nico Williams and the Athletic Bilbao players. They complained to the referee, but the referee only stopped the game momentarily, and no proper action was taken against the fans. Not long after the incident, the Spanish international found the back of the net and pointed to his skin. When asked about the incident after the match, he stated, "It's not normal to be abused because of your skin. I know there are stupid people everywhere, but it has to change." Atlético Madrid players supported me; they understand me; it's unacceptable to hear monkey sounds - I saw and heard three guys doing that." Nico Williams isn't the only victim of racism this season, as it has become a normal phenomenon in Spanish football. Players like Juanmi Latasa (Real Madrid B), Ibrahima Baldé (Real Zaragoza), Kaxe (SD Ponferradina), and Mouctar Diakhaby (Valencia) have also been targeted. FIFA needs to look into these cases, because it's important for players to feel safe while doing their jobs. Football is for everyone, no matter your skin or color. #SayNoToRacism.
