Updated: May 18, 2023

Manchester United defeated Wolves in Old Trafford on the 13th of May 2023, Manchester United came into the game hoping to get back to winning ways, the last time Man United won a game before this match on the 30th of April, against Aston Villa. The great news before the game was Raphael Varane was fit to start but Man United had to play without their highest goal scorer Marcus Rashford . Eric Ten Hag’s men lined up in a 4-2 -3-1 formation, veteran David De Gea was in goal, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof played at the center of defense, Casemiro and Eriksen played in the middle of the pack and Anthony Martial led the line.

Wolves came into this game knowing they have secured their Premier League status so they were only playing for pride, Wolves head coach Julian Lopetegui lined his side up in a defensive 4-4-2 formation Daniel Bentley was in between the sticks, Max Kilman and Craig Dawson were in the middle of defense, Mario Lemina and Ruben Neves were in the middle of the pack and former Chelsea man Diego Costa led the line.

There was not much action in the first half, the difference between both sides was Anthony Martial’s 32nd-minute goal and he was assisted by Antony. Man United had two opportunities in the first half which fell to Antony but he failed to capitalize on it, Wolves didn’t really trouble David De Gea in goal.

Man United were better in the second half as they created majority of the chances, Bentley only conceded one goal in the second half and it came in stoppage time when Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to score, Bentley made eight saves, the game was his first Premier League match.

The win drew Man United level on points with Newcastle United and four points above Liverpool, David De Gea was confirmed as the Golden Glove winner for the season after keeping his 16th clean sheet of the season, he has been very important for Man United this season and will be more important as Man United hope to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League next season and win the FA Cup.

Julian Lopetegui could be proud of his side’s defensive performance against a more superior side at least he could pick some positives from the game they play Everton next and would want to win to give their fans something to smile about.
