After a month of deliberation, the NFF finally appointed ex-Ajax player and Nigerian international Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles. Finidi George spent 20 months as an assistant to former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro. When Jose Peseiro stepped down as head coach, Finidi George took over as interim coach, leading the team in two matches against Mali and Ghana. During his two games in charge, the 52-year-old came under scrutiny due to his 3-4-3 formation style.
Finidi George is no stranger to success. As part of Ajax's 1990's golden team, he won three Eredivisie titles and the UEFA Champions League with the Dutch side. He was also part of Nigeria's golden football generation that won the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia and was one of the prolific wingers for Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
As the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi George's first task is to instill confidence in the young squad, integrate home-based players into the national team, and restore footballing glory to the country by qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and AFCON 2025.
