Osimhen Hattrick Keeps Nigeria’s World Cup Hopes Alive

Nigeria kept their World Cup dreams alive in dramatic fashion, scoring four goals in their final qualifier against Benin Republic to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup Playoffs.

Heading into the match, the Super Eagles sat third in their group and were outside the rankings of the best second placed teams. But against all odds, Nigeria not only defeated Benin to move into second place in their group, they also climbed into the top four best second placed teams overall, earning a place in the playoff round.

Victor Osimhen was the standout performer once again, scoring a hattrick and registering an assist. Frank Onyeka came off the bench to seal the result with a crucial goal in injury time that confirmed Nigeria’s progression.

It was an emotional rollercoaster for Nigerian football fans, with nerves and tension building throughout the game. The journey to the World Cup will continue in November, when Nigeria joins Cameroon, DR Congo, and Gabon in the playoff mini tournament set to take place in Morocco from November 13 to 16.

Speaking after the game, head coach Eric Chelle reflected on the result and reserved special praise for his team and Osimhen.

“I am very happy for my players, especially the best striker in the world, Victor. Now we go to Morocco. It is going to be very difficult. This is just the start and I am proud of everyone, and even the fans, because they pushed us.”

Victor Osimhen now has 29 goals and 12 assists for Nigeria,
