Renaissance Berkane have won the CAF Confederation Cup after securing a 3-1 aggregate victory over Simba SC. The Moroccan side entered the second leg with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.
The second leg was played on Sunday in Zanzibar, away from Simba’s iconic Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. With no home advantage, Simba knew they had a difficult task. They started brightly, as they took the lead in the 17th minute to keep their hopes alive. However, their dreams were dashed when Yusuph Kagoma was sent off in the 50th minute, leaving them with ten men. From then on, they struggled to break through Berkane’s resilient defense.
In stoppage time, Soumaila Sidibe sealed the win for Berkane with a late goal, crushing Tanzanian hopes.
This triumph marks Renaissance Berkane’s third CAF Confederation Cup title, making them the joint-most successful club in the competition’s history alongside Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien. Club captain Issoufou Dayo has appeared in all three of the club’s CAF Confederations Cup triumphs.
It has been a successful season for Berkane, who also claimed their first-ever Moroccan league title. With this continental success, they become the first club to lift the new CAF Confederation Cup trophy.
