CAF Confederations Cup began in 2004, and the inaugural champions were the Ghanaian club Hearts of Oak. Morocco has produced the most champions, seven times, while Tunisian side Club Sfaxien has the most titles, three, and the defending champions are Algerian side USM Alger.
Nigerian Professional League sides have been performing poorly on the continent of Africa. In eleven years, an NPFL side has made it to the Semi-Final once, and that was in 2018, when Eyimba was eventually knocked out by the Moroccan side Raja Casablanca three-one on aggregate. Eyimba has reached the Quarter Final on a few occasions in the last eleven years, but it's still not good enough for a country of more than 218.5 million people.
Rivers United has the chance to make history by being the first side in six years to qualify for the Semi-Final of the Continental showpiece. The governor of the state, Siminalayi Fubara, has shown his support for their cause, and the league and its chairman, Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye, are right behind them.
Rivers United coach, Stanley Eguma, is optimistic and believes his side has what it takes to reach the next round of the competition.
The Nigerian side takes on USM Alger at 10 PM in their home stadium, Omar Hamadi Stadium, which has a capacity of 10,000 spectators.
