
Southampton came from two goals down to gain a vital point against Tottenham Hotspur

Southampton came into this game in confidence, they had only lost one of their last three games beating Leicester City at home, drawing with Manchester United in Old Trafford and losing to Brentford at home, they needed three points to get out of the relegation zone. Southampton lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, Gavin Bazunu was in goal, Jan Bednarek and Armel Bella-Kotchap were in defence, club’s captain James Ward Prowse and Roméo Lavia were in the middle of the pack, the much experienced Theo Walcott and Che Adams led fifth-place.
Spurs needed a win to put the gap between them and fifth place Newcastle United to five points, coming into this game they have played a game more than Newcastle. Spurs lined up in a 3-4-2-1 formation Fraser Forster was in between the sticks, Spurs highest goal scorer and captain Harry Kane led the attack.
Both sides made two substitutions each in the first half due to injury, Richardson was replaced because of a hamstring problem and was replaced by Dejan Kulusevski five minutes into the game and eight minutes Bella-Kotchap was replaced by Ghanian international Mohamed Salisu, Bednarek and Ben Davies were also replaced and substituted by Maitland-Niles and Ivan Perisic.
Spurs went ahead before half time Pedro Porro have Spurs the lead late in stoppage time, the goal is his first goal for the club, he was assisted by Son. It was a quick start for Southampton in the second half as Che Adams drew Southampton level in the first minute of the second half, he was assisted by Walcott. Spurs had a penalty appeal in the 55th minute, Maitland-Niles blocked Perisic’s shot in the box but VAR said no penalty. Kane’s header put Spurs back in front in the 65th minute, he was assisted by Kulusevski. Ivan Perisic fine volley doubled Spurs lead in the 74th minute, Walcott reduced the deficit three minutes later, he was assisted by Mara.
There was still chance for more drama as Southampton was given a penalty in 91st minute Maitland-Niles was taken down by sarr in the box, Ward-Prowse stepped up and made no mistake. Spurs had an opportunity to get the winner in the 98th minute but Lenglet’s header goes wide.
It’s a vital points for the Saints and are two points from safety, it’s a step to the right direction they will face relegation threatened West ham after the international break and will need to take all three points, it’s going to be a mouth watering clash. Spurs remain fourth having played more, they will face Everton after the international break and there would be no margin for error.
