John Buckley: Al-Kholood’s Bargain of the Season

Al-Kholood’s scouting department struck gold with the signing of John Buckley, a 25-year-old midfielder from England. He joined the club in the summer from Blackburn Rovers for just £1 million.

Since his arrival, Buckley has been a difference-maker under head coach Des Buckingham. The Englishman has proven to be a true utility player, not only excelling as a central midfielder but also fitting seamlessly into deeper roles as a holding midfielder and further forward as an attacking option.

The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder has already made his mark in the Saudi Pro League. In just four appearances, he has scored two goals, including a stunning free-kick that earned him the league’s Goal of the Week award. His expected goals stand at 0.65, with an xG on target of 1.35 , numbers that underline his efficiency in front of goal.

But Buckley’s impact goes far beyond scoring. He has completed 98 successful passes, created four chances, and attempted six dribbles this season. Defensively, he has been just as impressive: winning 20 duels, recording six interceptions, four blocks that directly prevented goals, 15 ball recoveries, and two possessions won in the final third. His tackling has been both intelligent and disciplined committing nine tackles while picking up only two yellow cards.

Buckley’s performances so far have been remarkable, and all signs suggest he is only getting started. As the season unfolds, we will continue to follow this English midfield sensation closely.
