Naomi Osaka defeated Karolína Muchová 6–4, 7–6 (7–3) in straight sets to advance to the US Open semi-finals, marking her first appearance in a Grand Slam semi-final since giving birth to her daughter.
It is also Osaka’s first time reaching the quarter-finals of a major since returning to the tour as a mother.
Speaking to reporters in her post-match press conference, Osaka reflected on the nerves she felt in earlier rounds:
“Honestly, I was the most nervous for my first-round match and my [third-round] match against [Daria] Kasatkina. I don’t know why—I just was,” Osaka said.
“But I think for me it’s very strange: the deeper I go in a tournament, the less nervous I become—unless it’s a final, potentially. I don’t know. I haven’t been there in a while. Just because I know I have to give it my best shot.”
Osaka will face 2025 Wimbledon finalist and world number nine Amanda Anisimova in the semi-finals. Anisimova booked her spot in the final four after an impressive 6–4, 6–3 win over Iga Świątek.
Previewing her upcoming match, Osaka spoke highly of Anisimova:
“Definitely, for me, she’s always been one of the most talented players on tour,” Osaka said.
“I think no one wants to see her name next to theirs, especially with what she could potentially do.”
If Osaka beats Anisimova, she will reach her first Grand Slam final since the 2021 Australian Open, where she defeated Jennifer Brady 6–4, 6–3 to win her fourth major title.
