Zamalek Calls for VAR and Better Refereeing After Kaizer Chiefs Stalemate

Updated: Dec 8, 2025

Zamalek have filed an official complaint to CAF following their 1–1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs at the 94,797 capacity FNB Stadium. The Egyptian club expressed deep dissatisfaction with the officiating, placing particular blame on Rwandan referee Samuel Uwikunda. The White Knights described the result as a loss, insisting they were treated unfairly throughout the match.

Zamalek’s complaint lists three main incidents. First, the club argues that a legitimate goal was wrongly disallowed. Second, they claim several yellow cards issued to their players were unwarranted. Third, they highlight a strong penalty appeal involving Chico Banza that was not awarded. In addition to these complaints, Zamalek urged CAF to appoint more competent referees for their fixtures from Matchday Three onwards. They also requested the introduction of VAR in the group stage beginning from Matchday Three.

CAF has yet to respond to either the complaints or the reform requests. However, it is expected that the governing body will review the officiating concerns seriously, given its commitment to fairness and equality. As for the proposed reforms, CAF is likely to study the suggestions and consider potential steps toward improving match officiating standards.
